Modifying in Android terminology means changing the original app in some way. This can be accomplished simply by modifying and re-registering the existing APK file with your private key, or creating an entirely new app, resulting in two apps that appear and function the same but are technically different apps. The last method requires that you take the original application, disassemble it, add or change some code and then recompile. This is usually called a "difference".

    MODs are generally used to try to access features that are not normally available or to bypass restrictions imposed by carriers or OEMs. We have come across some MODs for HTC One S which claim to enable Google Wallet.

    When you use these apps, they actually replace your default wallet app with a fake wallet app that sends your credit card information to the developer so they can steal you. They don't really try to enable Google Wallet, so don't be fooled by saying things like "Just try it, it will work".

    Some MODs that have been around for a while are simple UI changes or apps that change certain aspects of the ROM. For example, some apps replace the dialer (phone app) or messaging app while others change system sounds and play animations.

    These types of MODs are generally safe although we always warn users against installing any MOD unless they fully understand what it does and how it works. Some of the other tweaks we've seen cause stability issues or severely reduce battery life.

    MOD . INSTALLATION

    MODs come in many different shapes and installation methods, but we'll cover the most popular: flashable zip recovery and .apk.


    The first is a simple flash recovery (like ClockworkMod or TWRP) that can be used to install all kinds of MODs like themes, apps like GO Contacts EX, performance mods, and more.

    Usually, a removable recoverable zip file is used to install one or more .apk files that are tampered with in some way after they are installed. The most common one is to install a custom launcher like Nova Launcher. Although the operator itself doesn't modify anything, it needs to be "modified" for many MODs to work properly, so this is where the modification process begins.

    MODs can range from very simple to very complex and each developer will have their own method of installation. Generally, you will need to root your device and an app like Root Explorer or ES File Explorer. You should also be comfortable using your computer, connecting to your device via USB, and using ADB/Terminal. Although not all MODs require these things, many do, and it's worth noting.

    Is MOD APK safe?

    Some MODs can be quite complex and can actually do some very cool things for your device. However, as mentioned before, you should always understand what the MOD does before you install it. There is a possibility that something is wrong and you won't want to find out after spending the whole night setting everything up properly. This happened with some users, but nothing too serious.

    There are many MODs that can provide a performance and battery life boost by changing some system settings or disabling things that normally run in the background of your device. You really have to be careful when choosing one of these because it may negatively affect your device if you don't understand what they do.

    Another downside is that some MODs may not be compatible with ROM Sense. Since Sense and Android are actually two different operating systems running on the same device, you may end up encountering issues like unlocked bootloader or software update not working properly after flashing a new ROM.

    If you go this route, it's best to find a ROM that you know is MOD compatible. Some developers will include special instructions on how to install their MODs, so be sure to read them if you're not sure what they're doing before flashing them.

    Mods and Sense ROMs

    The Sense ROM uses the "inverted" installation method. What this means is that when you flash the ROM, it will keep all your data but erase system apps and settings. When you roll back to Sense, it will erase your data before installing the new version. For this reason, MODs that are installed directly into system folders will not work properly with stock Sense ROMs. This is one of the reasons why many people choose to install Sense ROMs with TWRP instead of flashing them on fast boot. With TWRP, you can back up system apps and settings before wiping data. You can then re-flash that apk during the ROM installation process allowing it to work properly without worrying about compatibility issues.
